A new study published in Minnerva Gastroenterologica e Dietologica aimed to investigate dietary behaviors and epidemiology of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) patients in of the United States. This cross-sectional survey was conducted via a secured online server, wherein a representative sample of the US population were queried regarding demographics, gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms, treatments and dietary practices. Of the respondents, 161 reported IBS who were compared to 1,116 subjects reporting no GI diagnosis (controls). The findings indicated that when compared to controls, a higher number of IBS patients were over 45 years of age and females. Additionally, IBS patients reported abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, gas or bloating, and GERD or heartburn, more often than controls. Meanwhile, these patients were more likely to report food avoidance, over-the-counter remedies, probiotics, consultation with doctor or dietitian, and prescription but, a majority did not believe that their strategies were effective. Most IBS patients believed that food contributed to their symptoms, while those with IBS listed more dietary triggers. On the other hand, IBS patients were more likely to follow a dietary plan with 21% citing lactose-free, 17% gluten-free, and 9% low-FODMAP. Yet, 47% of patients with IBS denied following any dietary plans. Also, only 24% of IBS patients was aware of the low- FODMAP diet. Thus, IBS was reported by 9% of the population, mostly females over 45 years. IBS patients were more likely to implement therapeutic strategies and cite food triggers, but few were aware of the low-FODMAP diet. In inference, it was stated that outreach programs could improve awareness of this substantiated intervention.
