The purpose of a new study published in Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice was to identify the effect of ice massage with short and long duration applied over the large intestinal 4 (LI4) acupressure point, on labor process and perception of labor pain. This study enrolled 72 healthy pregnant women divided into an intervention and a control group. Women in the intervention group received ice massage with either short duration (40 min) or long duration (80 min), during labor. The findings revealed that ice massage applied on the LI4 region was effective in the 80th minute. Furthermore, the application of ice massage was found to reduce the labor duration of those in the intervention group by an average of one hour. Thus, it was inferred that ice massage applied by midwives on the LI4 point during the active phase of delivery could reduce pain and shorten the duration of labor and delivery.
