Postpartum pain, or painful uterine contractions, is a major postpartum problem, and relieving it could potentially improve breastfeeding and mother-infant interactions. Medicinal herbs could play a role in relieving postpartum pain with fewer side-effects and better acceptability in comparison with chemical medications. A recent study has shown that a combination of Kalonji and mefenamic acid could serve as an effective herbal remedy for women with postpartum pain. This randomized double-blind study, published in the Iranian Journal of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Infertility, compared the effects of the combination of Nigella sativa (Kalonji) and mefenamic acid and mefenamic acid alone on postpartum pain in multiparous women. In all, 100 multiparous women complaining of moderate-to-severe postpartum pain were enrolled in the study. The women were randomly assigned to two groups - Kalonji-mefenamic acid (n=50) and placebo-mefenamic acid (n=50). Severity of postpartum pain was measured with the help of the visual analogue scale (VAS) two hours after delivery, and women with a pain score of ≥4 were enrolled in the study. Severity and duration of pain were measured before and one hour after medication administration using VAS. The Kalonji-mefenamic acid group had more rapid and significant reduction in the severity of postpartum pain, compared to the placebo-mefenamic acid group. Therefore, it was concluded that the combination of Kalonji and mefenamic acid could be an effective herbal remedy in women with postpartum pain.
