Elective cesarean delivery increases the risk of overweight infant

Elective cesarean delivery is associated with the resulting child having an increased risk of or being overweight (high body mass index–for–age z score) at age 12 months, according to a prospective birth cohort study that looked at outcomes of elective and emergency cesarean sections separately published online Nov. 21, 2018 in JAMA Network Open. The authors suggest that clinicians should discuss potential long-term implications of elective cesarean delivery on child metabolic outcomes with patients who want to have children.
