A new study published in Maternal and Child Health Journal examined the relationship between breastfeeding and subsequent childhood cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors. This study utilized longitudinally linked data from three cross-sectional datasets in West Virginia involving 11,980 patients. The information on breastfeeding was obtained retrospectively through parental recall when the child was in the fifth grade. The outcome variables included blood pressure and lipid profile. It was found that only 43% of the mothers self-reported of ever breastfeeding. Meanwhile, children who were ever breasted had significantly lower systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), log- triglycerides (TG), and higher high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) than those who were never breastfed. In addition, after adjustment for the childs BMI, socio-demographic and lifestyle factors, log-TG remained significantly associated with breastfeeding. It was noted that the observed protective effect of any breastfeeding on childhood TG level was small but significant. This finding suggested a protective effect of breastfeeding on later CVD risk in the offspring.
