The role of herbal and traditional medicine is not well understood in pregnancy-related insomnia. A recent study determined the effects of Lactuca sativa L. (lettuce) seed on pregnant women for the treatment of insomnia. This was a prospective randomized clinical trial involving 100 pregnant women with insomnia aged 20-45 years. The participants were either given capsules containing 1000 mg of lettuce seed (n=50) or a placebo (n=50) daily for two weeks. The main outcome was the quality of sleep, measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). There was significantly greater improvement in the PSQI score in patients receiving lettuce seed as compared to those receiving placebo. Lettuce seed was found to decrease insomnia during pregnancy and could be recommended as a safe natural remedy to pregnant women with insomnia. The findings are published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology.
