Pravesh Sharma, 49, was arrested from Ulhasnagar in Maharashtra’s Thane district for allegedly practising as a doctor without the necessary registration with the medical council and causing death of a patient.

Sharma had treated a 17-year-old girl at his clinic in August 2017 after she complained of stomachache. The girl’s condition worsened and was taken to another hospital, but unfortunately, she later died. A post-mortem was conducted at the Ulhasnagar Central Hospital and a case of accidental death was registered, revealed police sub-inspector Yogesh Gaikar.

The preserved viscera were sent to a forensic laboratory, which approached the Maharashtra Council of Indian Medicine (MCIM) to confirm the details of the doctors who had treated the girl.

The MCIM recently submitted its report to the Thane police mentioning that Sharma was practising without a registration and action be taken against him.

The police thus arrested Sharma on Monday and booked him under IPC sections 419 and 420 (cheating) and provisions of the Maharashtra Medical Practitioners Act. (PTI)
