The Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) is likely to take action against the Pune-based pathologists who have been allowing others to use their names and authorized signatures to run illegal labs. The move comes after the MMC initiated prompt action against four pathology labs in the city. A senior official from the Maharashtra Association of Practicing Pathologists and Microbiologists mentioned that some laboratories are running illegally in Pune, and a complaint will soon be lodged against them.

The official added that based on specific information, a surprise inspection was conducted on 10 pathology labs, which revealed that about 5-6 pathologists had permitted illegal pathology labs to use their names and signatures on the diagnostic reports. He mentioned that they will submit a complaint in writing to the MMC.

Dr Sandeep Yadav, President of the Maharashtra Association of Practising Pathologists and Microbiologists stated that it is a legal requirement for pathologists to be present in the pathology labs. He added that of over 10,000 pathology labs across Maharashtra, 5,000 have registered pathologists working in them. Nearly 5-7,000 illegal labs are being run with only the signature and name of pathologists.

President of MMC, Dr Shivkumar Utture, stated that appropriate action will be taken against the pathologists in Pune once they receive the Maharashtra Association of Practising Pathologists and Microbiologists complaint. Earlier, the council had taken action against four pathologists in Mumbai. He mentioned that an investigation on the Pune pathologists will be conducted as soon as the complaint is received.
