Dysmenorrhea refers to symptoms associated with painful menstruation and can be divided into primary and secondary dysmenorrhea. Several studies have focused on herbal medicines for dysmenorrhea. A systematic review published in World Family Medicine assessed the efficacy of hot temperament herbs in primary dysmenorrhea. The systematic review was performed in 2017. Data was obtained using electronic databases, such as Scopus, Pubmed, Web of Science, EMBASE and Chinese scientific journal database. All randomized controlled trials (RTCs) were included in the review.

Ginger was found to have the same effect as mefenamic acid or ibuprofen in pain reduction in one study. Ginger can be boiled in water and drinking the solution can reduce the pain. Chamomile exhibits anti-inflammatory as well as anti-spasmodic effects. Chamomile has also been shown to be more effective than mefenamic acid in pain reduction. Mint is another hot temperament herb that has been used to treat dysmenorrhea. Menthol content of mint oil acts as an antagonist of calcium channels and is associated with muscle relaxation. Valeriana officinalis has been found to be effective in pain reduction, as compared with placebo, and has been shown to have the same effect as mefenamic acid and other NSAIDs. Cramp Bark and Black Haw are effective herbs to reduce uterine cramps and relieve pains. Fennel essential oil has also been noted to be beneficial in reducing pain and systemic symptoms of primary dysmenorrhea compared with placebo. Treatment with Cumminum cyminum has been shown to be equal to treatment with mefenamic acid. Some studies suggest that cinnamon has an antispasmodic effect. It has also been shown to be more effective than placebo in reducing the severity of dysmenorrhea. Melissa officinalis can also be used for pain relief.

There was no negative result in the studies. Most of studies pointed that the effects of ginger were better than other herbs in the treatment of primary dysmenorrhea. All of the studies showed the superior effect of herbal medicines over ibuprofen in the treatment of dysmenorrhea.
