A new article published in Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology discussed that cervicitis – the inflammation of the cervix, is usually caused by an infectious agent which is often sexually transmitted. Cervicitis is frequently asymptomatic and a silent infection that can cause complications of the upper genital tract. Its symptoms are usually nonspecific, the most significant being increased vaginal discharge and/or intermenstrual bleeding. The authors reported that commercial systems are used for its diagnosis which are based on molecular techniques that detect almost all known pathogens associated with cervicitis. Nevertheless, the value of cultures should not be undermined since they aid in testing the susceptibility to antibiotics. It was stated that initially, an empirical antibiotic therapy against C. trachomatis and N. gonorrhoeae is recommended in cases of women at a high risk of infection by these pathogens, particularly, if the follow-up is not assured or adequate diagnostic tests are not available. Whereas, in women with a low risk of sexually transmitted infection, antibiotic therapy should be specific to the results of microbiological investigations.
