MUMBAI: Nine persons, including four doctors, have been arrested for operating a racket that involved illegal abortions of female fetuses in Maharashtras Aurangabad district, said police. An official said that the racket was ongoing for several years in the MIDC, CIDCO and Osmanpura areas of the district. One of the arrested doctors, Dr Varsha Rajout, is a government medical officer, he mentioned. Deputy Commissioner of Police, Aurangabad city, Rahul Khade, stated that they suspected that these persons performed at least 200 abortions in hospitals and clinics.

He mentioned that the racket was exposed following a tip-off on January 22, leading to the arrest of five persons in a raid on a hospital by MIDC police.

Police investigation has revealed that accused Dr Suraj Rana, the kingpin in the racket, was the key link between hospitals and clients desiring an abortion, said the official. He mentioned that besides referring such persons to hospitals for carrying out illegal abortions, Rana also sometimes carried sex-determination machines to these medical facilities.

He added that during a raid on a hospital in Osmanpura by a police team led by Assistant Police Inspector Shradda Vaydande, at least 10 chambers were found inside the rooms adjacent to the beds and a main chamber outside the hospital.

Vaydande stated that they are investigating if these chambers were for the purpose of destroying the aborted fetus after the illegal abortion.

The nine persons have been charged under relevant sections of the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act and the Indian Penal Code. Five of them have been sent to judicial custody, while four have been remanded in police custody till February 7. (PTI)
