After a 20-year-old woman apparently died of shock after coming to know that she has been diagnosed as an HIV+ case, Himachal Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur has ordered a high-level investigation. Later, the tests showed she was not HIV+ as earlier diagnosed.

The woman, who got married eight months back was rushed to a private hospital in Rohru to treat her ectopic pregnancy and from there was referred to a hospital in Shimla for surgery. At the Shimla hospital, on seeing the HIV+ report, the doctors asked her husband also to get tested. She overheard their conversation and slipped into a coma.

A new round of tests conducted at Shimla’s Integrated Counselling and Testing Centre (ICTC) had ruled out HIV. But, the woman’s condition was very critical by then and she died at the IGMC Hospital on Tuesday. Her brother Des Raj, who is employed at IGMC in Shimla, said that it was too late and she couldn’t not bear the shock and stigma of HIV.

The chief minister clarified that the cause of death as still not clear but strict action will be taken against the private clinic “for preparing a wrong HIV positive report”. He promised compensation to the woman’s family as per rules. He responded to Congress MLA from Rohru, Mohan Lal Brakta, who has raised this matter in the Assembly.

Des Raj said that his sister had developed some complications and was rushed to Sanjeevani Hospital in Rohru. But, doctors there informed that she would need immediate surgery, which could not be done in Rohru. So, referring her to the Kamla Nehru Hospital in Shimla, they also handed over reports of her tests which included one report showing her as HIV+.

At the Shimla hospital, her husband was asked to undergo tests by the doctors as his wife’s test reports showing was HIV+. Des Raj alleged that his sister must have overheard this conversation and slipped into coma. The KNH doctors later referred her to IGMC hospital’s medicine department for treatment.

After two days, tests conducted by the ICTC centre of National Aids Control Organisation (NACO) found out that she was not HIV+ as initially diagnosed.

Dr Chinmoy Deb Barma of Sanjeevani Hospital accepted that he did mention the HIV status in the report sent to KNH, Shimla. He said that he never disclosed this to the patient or her attendants. This was leaked at Kamla Nehru Hospital. Whatever he had observed in his preliminary examinations related to HIV status was subject to confirmation at the ICTC lab of NACO. He further said that hehas not done any wrong thing and was ready for any inquiry.
