Death of a woman after doctors leave cotton wad inside her abdomen

A women died on December 28, due to infection caused by a left cotton wad inside her stomach after undergoing a Caesarean section surgery in the government hospital. She was admitted to the Vriddhachalam hospital, Puducherry, a previous night with a complaint of labor pain. The same night doctors present at the hospital performed a C- section on the patient, after which patient complained of severe stomach pain.

After a day, doctors at Vriddhachalam hospital referred the patient to Jipmer, allegedly after she developed complications. Primarily, the doctors at Jipmer said that the woman might be suffering from severe sepsis caused by the presence of foreign parties in the body.

A team of doctors then performed surgery in the abdomen of the woman and found a mass of inflated tissues full of pus which was further drained. After the removal of pus, they discovered the cotton wad which had been left in the womans abdomen. However, the patient could not recover from the infection even after the surgery and she died.

Although family members of the deceased were staging a protestin front of the hospital, the police, reached the spot in time and convinced them against it. A complaint has been registered at the Vriddhachalam police station.

After the unfortunate incident, health department additional director, joint director from Chennai and joint director from Cuddalore visited the Vriddhachalam government hospital for conducting the preliminary inquiries. The team also issued a show-cause notice to the staff, asking them to present an explanation for the incident. After completion of inquiry, the team will further initiate obligatory departmental action against the doctors and staff involved in the surgery.
