British drugmaker AstraZeneca Plc has stated that its COVID-19 vaccine should be effective against the new variant of coronavirus. It further stated that studies were ongoing to assess the impact of the mutation.

An AstraZeneca representative stated that their vaccine candidate contains the genetic material of the SARS-CoV-2 virus spike protein, and the changes to the genetic code observed in the new viral strain do not seem to change the structure of the spike protein. The representative added that through vaccination with AZD1222 - AstraZeneca’s vaccine candidate - the body’s immune system is trained to identify several different parts of the spike protein, so that it can eliminate the virus when it is exposed to it later… (Reuters, December 23, 2020)
