On Sunday, the police officials said that a woman was charged for allegedly assaulting a Guru Teg Bahadur (GTB) hospital doctor who asked her to leave from the COVID patient’s ward. The incident took place on Saturday on the emergency duty doctor of the COVID ward.

In her complaint, the doctor stated that the wife of a COVID positive patient who was admitted in the hospital slapped her. The woman was with her husband who was admitted in the COVID ward. When she was asked to leave as only COVID positive patients were allowed, she refused to go leading to an argument in which she slapped the doctor.

The police said that the accused had also tested positive for COVID-19 but was not admitted in the hospital. The doctor had filed a complaint with the hospital’s director and it was forwarded to the police for further action.

An FIR was registered on Sunday under applicable sections of the Indian Penal Code based on the complaint. The police said that she was also charged under the Medicare Service Personnel and Medicare Service Institution Prevention of Violence and Damage to Property Act 2008.

R Sathiyasundaram, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahadra) said that based on the complaint, they have registered an FIR against the accused. The matter is under enquiry and all the charges will be observed and based on the facts they will take action.

The Delhi Medical Association has condemned the behaviour of the patients and their relatives and also demanded improved security for the doctors.
