Members of the Resident Doctors’ Association from Mysuru Medical College and Research Institute (MMC&RI) are staging a protest today, alleging denial of salary to junior doctors appointed at the institute by the government. 

A total of 126 MBBS students of 2021, who graduated from different institutions in Karnataka, were posted at MMC&RI in June-end and have not been paid since then. They stated that an MBBS graduate is paid Rs 40,000 in other institutions; however, the management of MMC&RI has not given them any salary.

A junior resident doctor told The New Indian Express that when they enquired about their salary, they were told that no junior resident doctor posts existed at MMC&RI. However, the government order that they had received mentioned appointments to the 126 posts.

The directorate of medical education had also told them that they have to be paid from the institute’s funds. Moreover, when they brought to the notice of the management that other institutes were paying junior resident doctors, they were told to take a transfer. The doctors were told by the management that the institute cannot pay them.

While several doctors were put on COVID duties, they did not even receive the incentive of Rs 10,000 per month. 

A junior resident doctor said that it was getting difficult for them to work without money, adding that several of their batch mates have lost their parents and have to depend on their relatives for money. They are not being provided any accommodation and are required to pay for all their requirements, taking financial help from their family or relatives.
