Three doctors suspended, three nurses terminated in hospital fire incident

MUMBAI: Three medical officers were suspended while three nurses were terminated from service by the Maharashtra government in connection with the civil hospital fire incident in Ahmednagar in which 11 people lost their lives.

State health minister Rajesh Tope said that based on the primary report, a decision has been taken to suspend Ahmednagar District civil hospital surgeon Dr Sunil Pokharana, Medical officer Dr Suresh Dhakane, Medical officer Dr Vishakha Shinde, and three staff nurses Sapana Pathare, Asma Sheikh and Channa Anant have been permanently terminated from service.

The fire at the hospital killed 11 COVID-19 patients in the ICU, while six suffered injuries. Starting at the AC unit in the ICU, the fire spread within a minute across the ICU area. Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray ordered a high-level inquiry into the incident.
